Title: Something Has To Give
Author:
ruyu
Wordcount: 343
Rating: General
Characters: Peter Bash, Jared Franklin, Janie Ross
Pairing(s): implied! Peter/Janie
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the character, no money is made.
Summary: Pre-Pilot. Peter and Janie argue about the only thing worth arguing about: Jared Franklin
"Dammit Peter! It's not funny anymore. It hasn't been funny for years."
And Peter knows Janie's right, but you don't ask a guy to choose between his girlfriend and his best friend. You just don't - but she's asking and Peter doesn't want to try to answer this question... again.
Jared is passed out on their couch, clutching a skin mag to his chest like a teddy bear, one arm flung out to rest on the coffee table. Peter can only smile fontdly at him and go fetch a blanket while Janie shakes her head in violent disapproval in the kitchen of their apartment.
It's best to walk away when they start to argue. The two of them, stubborn attorneys that they are, living under the same roof has always been volatile. All their buttons are visible to be pushed and they are both so successful at prodding each other. It's exciting to argue and debate, but when it comes down to the issue that is Jared Franklin, things can get messy and Janie has learned not to hold back just because Jared is his best friend.
When Peter returns with the blanket, Janie starts up again.
"How many times do I have to say that this can't happen again. We've been trying to start our future together and this... " She flings an accusing finger toward the couch, "keeps happening."
"Babe. I couldn't leave him there and he hates it when he sleeps alone at the office," Jared explains as he covers Jared up, peeling the magazine from his friend's cheek.
"No, Peter. That's no excuse. What he does after work is his business, not yours. Leave him to himself!"
"He's my best friend. Of course it's my business!"
Janie turns away, flushed and upset, unwilling to sympathize with Peter and his relationship with Jared. They've reached this impasse so many times before that he doesn't really know where to go anymore. It's becoming a constant problem and the more Peter tries to tie all his knots and pull his girlfriend and best friend together, the more tangled things become.
Something has to give.
