Yeah, it's like how he'd get so defensive over anything to do with Janie. Jared doesn't see Charlie as any real threat, so he'll let it ride for now.
I have a terrible head canon where Jared didn't actually want to be a lawyer, but Peter did (because Peter saw how successful and important Leonard was, as opposed to his drywalling, family ditching father) and Peter wanted to go to college and then law school, so Jared followed. And Peter wanted to try and be a big corporate lawyer, and Jared didn't because that's too like Leonard for him, but then Peter got fired and went back to Jared and Jared had to make up a whole little law business for them so that Peter could be a lawyer. And sure it's great because he gets to be with Peter, but Peter keeps trying to leave (he's not good at it, but he keeps trying) and Peter doesn't really get what Jared did for him, because of him, and it just makes me really sad whenever Jared says things alluding to how great their life is. It's like he's begging Peter not to leave him. Tragic.
