Funny thing is i was thinking about going into graphic design, but the i decided i wanted to be a psychologist.

I have gimp, but i have hear it is no where near as good a photoshop.

I have GIMP. It's not as good as photoshop, but once you get the hang of it you can still do quite a bit.

I've heard of gimp, but never used it. But I know people who make icons in it. There are loads of tutorials available on youtube about making icons/avatars.

Yup. It's how I make all of mine.
I'm not great with it, but it works and it's pretty user friendly.
