Prompt: One of their bad habits (but could also be one of their insecurities, I guess)

Jared had lots of bad habits, he left his dirty dishes on the kitchen counter, he talked with food in his mouth and he always had some inappropriate comment to throw in a conversation whenever it got uncomfortable. None of these really bothered Peter anymore since he’d gotten used to them, there was one bad habit though that Peter had come really aware of lately.

He knew that Jared was sort of addicted to his phone; whenever someone called he just had to answer, whether it was in court, at a meeting or what really annoyed Peter, in bed.

Before they started this thing they had, Peter hadn’t really thought much of Jared’s obsession with answering his calls or messages immediately. However, he got very aware of it when Jared answered a call from Hanna while they were half naked and making out on his bed.

“Yeah, Jared.” He said into the phone as he mindlessly kept stroking Peter’s arm while talking to his colleague.

Peter looked down at him with raised eyebrows and muttered a “really?” to his friend. Seriously, what was that about?

Jared just held up a finger, signalizing he’d be done soon.

“Yeah, just send them over. We’ll look at it tonight.” Jared said before saying goodbye and hanging up the phone.

“So, where were we?” Jared said and once again started kissing Peter’s neck.

“What was that about?” Peter said as Jared started stroking his hair and bringing him closer to his body.

“What was what about?” Jared said innocently, and Peter was about to protest, but then Jared started licking that spot behind his ear that always drove him crazy and then the conversation was pretty much over except for some moaning of names.

That night when he’d gone to bed, Peter started remembering how Jared had answered a call from Debbie while they were at the movies, irritating everyone else there. He also remembered one specific time a couple of months ago when he just had to read a text message from his dad while they were making out on the coach.

After a couple of days Peter had forgotten all about the incident with the phone call. They had been working their asses off on a case and had barely been able to work in a hand job before they went to sleep. It wasn’t until the night after they’d won the case, when Peter was watching TV when Jared had come into the living room with his hair dripping wet and sticking out all over the place, with nothing but a towel on that Peter had decided Jared wasn’t clean enough and could use another shower and that he should probably come with him to make sure he’d get it right this time.

Jared had only laughed as Peter had smacked his ass and nearly pushed him to Jared’s bedroom and into the bathroom.

Once the clothes and towels were discharged and there was kissing, groping and lots of moaning, Jared pulled back and grinned at Peter. “Someone’s missed me, huh?” He said with quite a lot of confidence. “Shut up, Jare.” Peter said and crashed their lips together again, now with a lot more enthusiasm and a lot more tongue. Just as they pulled away again and Peter sighed happily as Jared was about to kneel in front of him, he heard the familiar ringtone from Jared’s phone.

“Don’t answer that!” Peter said at once, but Jared was already standing up in the tub. As he turned off the water reached out and grabbed the phone from the sink (where he always kept his phone while showering), Peter had to resist the urge to kill him.

“Hello” Jared said as he answered the phone. “Yeah, this is him.”

Peter was dangerously close to turning on the water and destroying that piece of crap once and for all.

“No, I don’t think so.” Jared said into the phone before catching Peter’s death stare. “Yeah, I gotta go, bye.”

“Nice talk?” Peter asked as he tilted his head and crossing his arms over his chest. He had to admit he couldn’t look that intimidating since he was in fact, naked.

“Sorry, I’m all yours now.” Jared answered and tried to lean up and kiss Peter, but he Peter just tilted his head away from Jared’s touch.

“Who was that?”

“Hm?”

“On the phone?” Peter asked, making Jared just stare at their feet for a second.

“Just a girl wanting to sell some stationery.” Jared mumbled.

Peter just stared at him for a while “You answered your phone and you didn’t even know who it was?”

“Well, I hung up pretty fast!” Jared answered “I don’t really see the problem, it could have been important!”

“How is stationery more important than me?” Peter yelled.

It continued on to that for a while before Peter grabbed a towel and stormed out of the bathroom. Jared just stood there shouting things at Peter through the door even though he was pretty sure that Peter couldn’t hear him.

The next day was pretty awkward; they almost never fought, especially not over things that couples would fight over.  They ate their breakfast in silence and ignored Carmen’s comments. At work things didn’t improve much; at the morning meeting Peter and Jared started fighting over which case they should take and when Infeld finally decided for them, they just stared angrily at each other for the rest of the meeting. They continued arguing about the approach of the case in front of the client and they were both threatened to be taken off the case. Both Peter and Jared were able to act like adults for the rest of the day, but they continued their childish bantering on the car ride home.

“You are so insensitive.” Peter began when they were almost home.

I’m insensitive?” Jared asked “You who doesn’t mind flirting with girls and taking them to your room when I am standing right there, just to make me jealous?”

“It’s not to make you jealous, and you’re the one who doesn’t want to be exclusive!”

“Well, maybe I changed my mind!” Jared said as Peter stopped the car and Jared almost jumped out and started heading for the house.

Peter hurried after him “What? What are we even fighting over right now?”

“If you could just stop thinking about yourself and your… sexual needs for two seconds you’d know why I have to have my phone with me all the time!” Jared said as he stormed inside and slammed the front door shut.

Peter just stood there, completely baffled by the whole thing. He knew why was Jared so addicted to his phone? Had he ever told him? And wait- did Jared want to be exclusive?

He let out a growl of frustration and sat down on the lawn, trying to sort of his thoughts. He must have sat there for a while because when he finally looked up and let out an “off course”, it was almost dark outside.

Jared was sitting with his legs crossed on the bed with his phone in front of him when Peter entered his bedroom. ‘

“Hi buddy.” Peter said with a smile and sat down opposite of Jared “I finally figured it out.”

“I know it’s stupid.” Jared answered.

“It’s not.”

When Jared and Peter had first met back in school, Jared was not obsessive over his phone. Maybe because he didn’t even have a cell phone back then, but he wasn’t so keen on staying in touch with people everywhere he went, as he was now.

One night Jared and Peter had been to a party and were pretty drunk once they’d gotten back to their dorm. Once they’d finally settled in and was lying peacefully in their beds, the phone they kept in their room rang.

“Don’t answer that.” Peter moaned into his pillow.

“What if it’s that’s girl you gave our phone number to?” Jared answered, but was already pulling a blanket over himself.

“Then I’ll call her back in the morning, if she’s already calling me she’s a little too desperate for me anyway.” Peter said as he met Jared’s eyes across the dark room.

“You love them when they’re desperate.” Jared answered with a grin, before they both fell asleep.

The next morning they were awoken by the phone again, Peter had groaned and got up from the bed to answer it.

“Who is it?” Jared asked as he rubbed his eyes, already feeling one Hell of a hangover.

Jared would never forget the way Peter had looked at him.

His mom had had another “episode” as they called it. Jared’s mom was sick and she really couldn’t be left alone over a longer period of time. She had a very strong bipolar disease and when something bad happened, she had a tendency to stop taking her medicine.

The night before had been one of those times. Jared’s dad had gotten a phone call while at his mistress house; his mom had found out about the affair a couple of days ago and had stopped taking her medicine without Leonard even noticing. Jared’s mom had thrown a fit in a store as she’d tried to steal (or after her own explanation, forgot to pay) a pair of sunglasses and a lipstick. She’d gotten so mad that she’d stormed out into traffic and got hit by a car.

Peter had driven Jared to the hospital; his mom had needed surgery and was pretty beat up. She had sworn nothing like that would happen again… It did.

It hadn’t happened a lot though, a couple of years later she’d gone into deep depression and refused her meds after Jared’s grandfather had died, but Jared had helped her on the right tracks again, the whole time afraid that she’d hurt herself. There was also an incident where Jared had to move back for a weekend because his mom had lost her job and had called Leonard in a drunken state. His dad had called Jared and he’d had to drive up to his mom’s apartment in the middle of the night.

Except for that and a couple of incidents when Jared was a kid that he’d told Peter about when they were waiting at the hospital the day Peter had found out that his best friend’s life was a lot more complicated than he first thought.

“I’m sorry I didn’t think about it before.” Peter said.

Jared just smiled “You know, I get the fact that you want to have me all for yourself, but you gotta learn to share.”

Peter just laughed “You’re such a dork, you know that?”

“Shut up.” Jared said and grinned stupidly at Peter.

“So…” Peter started, while stroking Jared’s fingers that were restlessly tapping his knee. “You wanna be like… a couple, then?”

Jared looked up from his tapping fingers and met Peter’s eyes. “I was just, you know… I’ve been thinking about it.”

“Yeah?”

“Well, I don’t like to share either!” Jared exclaimed as Peter just continued grinning at him.

“Let’s try it then.”

Jared raised his eyebrows “Really?”

“Sure, and let’s start with some well-deserved make up sex.” Peter suggested and leaned over and kissed Jared chastely on the mouth.

“Very couple-like.” Jared pointed out.

“I thought so too.” Peter said and leaned over to kiss Jared again, but Jared stopped him with a finger to his lips.

“Just one second.” He said and grabbed his phone, turned it off and threw it on a pile of shirts that was currently spread out over the floor of his room.

“What if someone calls?” Peter asked, but it was pretty obvious he didn’t care at he was lying down on the bed, dragging Jared on top of him.

“They can leave a message.”

I thought this was really beautiful - a great mix of comedy, hotness and angst. I liked the set up of their relationship and their eventual decision to be exclusive. Like there's really anyone else for either of them! And you handled Jared's reasoning for always answering his phone really sensitively.

...Peter had decided Jared wasn’t clean enough and could use another shower and that he should probably come with him to make sure he’d get it right this time...

I just *loved* that line, it really made me grin and what a great way to get them both in the shower! Thanks for taking one of these prompts and running with it. ;o)
